People who watch MSNBC exclusively can answer more questions about domestic events than people who watch no news at all. People who only watch Fox did much worse. NPR listeners answered more questions correctly than people in any other category.
The survey of 1185 random people conducted by landline and cell phone in early February follows a similar poll FDU conducted last November, which surveyed only New Jersey residents and returned similar results.
Each respondent was asked four of eight questions, which are at the bottom of this post. “On average, people were able to answer correctly 1.8 of 4 questions about international news, and 1.6 of 5 questions about domestic affairs,” the report says. Here’s the breakdown by viewing habits.
Interestingly, the results of the poll controlled for partisanship. MSNBC talk radio consumers answered more questions correctly when their political views aligned with those of the outlets they preferred.
Moderates and liberals who watched only Fox did worse than conservatives who watched it. This mirrored the results at MSNBC, where a conservative viewer could be expected to answer an average of .71 international questions correctly, for example, and a liberal viewer could be expected to answer 1.89 questions correctly. “None of the other news media had effects that depended on ideology.
MSNBC News History
MSNBC (stylized as msnbc; MSNBC Cable, LLC) is an American basic cable and satellite television network that provides news coverage and political opinion on current events. It is owned by the NBCUniversal News Group, a unit of the NBCUniversal Television Group division of NBCUniversal. Its name was derived from the most common abbreviations for Microsoft and the National Broadcasting Company.
MSNBC and msnbc were founded in 1996 as separate partnerships between Microsoft and General Electric’s NBC unit, which is now NBCUniversal. Although they shared the same name, msnbc and MSNBC maintained separate corporate structures and news operations, with msnbc on the West Coast on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington, and MSNBC in the NBC headquarters.
Microsoft divested its stake in the MSNBC channel in 2005, and divested its stake in msnbc in July 2012, rebranding the general news site as NBCNews and creating a new msnbc as the online home of the cable news channel. MSNBC shares the NBC logo of a rainbow peacock with its sister channels.
In the mid-2000s, MSNBC’s opinion programming reflected its concept of political progressivism. In October 2010, it publicly acknowledged this with a marketing campaign it called “Lean Forward”.
Further, in September 2013, MSNBC launched its revamped official website under the tagline, “What Progressives Have Been Waiting For. Commentators have described MSNBC as having a bias towards left-leaning politics and the Democratic Party. In 2011 Politico referred to MSNBC as “left-leaning.
MSNBC was established by NBC executive Tom Rogers. Rogers was instrumental in developing the strategic partnership with Microsoft, which invested $221 million for a 50% share of the cable channel.
MSNBC and Microsoft would share the cost of a $200 million newsroom in Secaucus, New Jersey, for msnbc.com. The network took over the channel space of NBC’s 18-month-old America’s Talking network, though in most cases cable carriage had to be negotiated with providers who never carried AT.
